With the impending weather of more rain and possible heavy snow, we’ve received a lot of phone calls wondering what will happen if you can’t get in the fields to harvest your soybeans this year.

As in the past, if the wet conditions are common to the area and a number of producer’s can’t get their crops harvested by the end of the insurance period (12/10 for corn and soybeans), the insurance company can request a harvest extension.  If granted by RMA, the insurance companies can wait for the producer to harvest the crop during the winter/spring and are not required to complete an appraisal on 12/10 (or shortly thereafter.)

If an insured wanted the insurance company to appraise their production on 12/10, they can do so, but if the insured harvested less production in the spring, they would not be compensated for the additional loss.
